I have heard of some of the other browsers mainly because of incompatability problems with Microsoft and Firefox! Didn’t have a clue what a widget or mashup was until I read the notes! I watched the screencast.LbX and installed LibX toolbar. With Jenny’s help found the toolbar on my internet explorer. I don’t think I will personally have any use for it but would imagine it could be useful for people looking up books, journals and library information.

Week 11 – Web based office tools
This week we are looking at web based applications that mirror the functions of Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel and Powerpoint which can be used within groups groups.
Set up google account. Activity on spreadsheet. Answer is 1821. Googled and:-

Week 7: Virtual worlds and second life workshop
Attended the workshop today. I didn’t have much previous knowledge of this. Enjoyed creating an aviator in second life, naming, flying, walking, changing appearance etc. There was a problem that stopped me getting into the Imperial College site to fly up the Queen’s tower.
I could imagine that these virtual worlds could be useful for organising meetings where it is not necessary or practical for people to actually be there in person. I was also interested to see that this is used by the Open University for holding classes. I was particularly interested in this as I used to be a student of the ou. This must be very helpful for ou students and could perhaps also be used by other universities, for example, if the swine flu becomes a big problem.

I just have a fairly basic mobile phone as I don’t use it excessively. It does not even have the facility for me to upload a photograph for this week’s task! I have uploaded a pic taken from my digital camera on a recent holiday instead!

After returning from holiday felt very rusty and work manic. Have got Facebook account, joined up with Debbies group learning 2.0. Tried twittering but got confused and gave up.

week 3
This week the exercise was to add social bookmarks into delicious. With the help of Laurence, I added the bookmarks in my outlook favourites into the delicious site. The delicious site can be used anywere for looking up favouites.
Going away for 2 week holiday to Majorca on Friday so will miss 2 weeks of the course including Social Networking (Facebook) which I was looking forward to. Hope I can catch up when I get back!

week 2 blog
Week 2:- Set up RSS aggretator or newsfeeds using using Google function. Added a few links of interest. Struggled with this as tere were problems with my computer but eventually got it sorted out. Realised I had accidentally password protected my blog so noone could look at it – not that it is particularly interesing as you can see. Took a while to sort this out too.

week 1 blog
Week 1: used hotmail to set up instant messaging. Sent my first instant message through msm. I have only used facebook for instant messaging in the past.
Set up 1st blog which seems straightforward so far.
